The Gospel School from Gothenburg, Sweden, is coming to Chicago!
The school consists of 20 students enrolled in a program devoted entirely to gospel music, known as the “Gospel Line.” Their class includes a band of 6–7 musicians—drums, piano, Hammond organ, bass, percussion, guitar, and occasionally saxophone—while the remaining students form the choir.
At school, they study the history of gospel music from its origins among enslaved people to the many expressions of gospel today. Understanding this history is central to their education, ensuring that when they sing and play, they communicate the depth, meaning, and message of the music. Throughout the year, they learn new repertoire and tour across Sweden to raise funds for their upcoming trip to Chicago.
Their daily schedule includes lessons in music theory, ear training, choir and accompaniment, Bible studies, gospel history, conducting, and individual instruction in voice and instruments. It functions much like a music conservatory devoted exclusively to gospel music. The students also live together on campus in four boarding houses, with about five students in each house, creating a close-knit, family-like community.
The program has been a transformative experience for the students, who are passionate about sharing the message of gospel music. They continue to grow as singers, musicians, and leaders while deepening their understanding and love of the gospel tradition.
