Through the case study of Swedish immigrant Enoch Matteson, Janet will illustrate the research methods, records, and analytical techniques used to reconstruct an ancestor's journey from Sweden to America.

A native of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Janet's interest in family history began after interviewing her grandfather, a World War I veteran. The stories he shared sparked a lifelong quest to understand the lives of ordinary people who experienced extraordinary moments in history. Her research journey has taken her on five trips to Sweden and several to Nova Scotia in search of family connections and historical context.  Janet is a former President of the Delta County Genealogical Society, founder and leader of the Swedish Genealogy Group of Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia, and Cultural Leader for Drott Lodge of the Vasa Order of America. She recently completed the GenProof course, participated in ProGen, and has attended numerous Swedish American Genealogist (SAG) Conferences. She has also developed and organized two genealogical conferences for the Vasa Order of America.

Her speaking engagements have included presentations for Drott Lodge and District 9 of the Vasa Order of America, the Fairfax Genealogy Society, the Sons of Norway in Washington, D.C., and the Escanaba Public Library.

Most notably, Janet is known for her exceptional research skills and her dedication to helping others improve their genealogical techniques. Although she does not speak Swedish, she has become highly accomplished in Swedish genealogy through extensive use of Swedish records, databases, and research methodologies.
